18 BROTHER HAWK
Tika had been sitting at his fire praying for an hour before the first hint of dawn showed above the eastern ridge line. Once again, he asked Wakan Tanka to hide him from the eyes and minds of the blue-eyed girl and her mother. Now he asked the Great Spirit to hide his scent from the wolves that protected the girl and from the warriors of her village as well.
The stars were just starting to fade when Tika left his simple camp. He had slept, but not for long. He was excited to reach the village he had seen in his dreams and in his fire. He had never been this close to having the power he was sure would lift the fog covering the faces of the Pawnee warriors that had killed his family and taken Mina from him.
As he rode along, he thought about the Pawnee he had killed. His raids on their hated enemies had been successful but always unsatisfying. He never knew if the Pawnee that fell to his club, knife, and arrows were the ones that killed his family and took his sister from him.
He tried to clear his mind. He knew, with each step of his trusted war horse he was getting closer to his enemy. Although Tika believed Wakan Tanka would hide him from the eyes of everyone in the village which lie ahead. He also believed he needed to approach the villageâas his father had taught him to approach any enemyâwith the stealth and cunning of a Lakota warrior.
Tika couldnât keep his mind from wandering. Would the blue-eyed girl grow to be as beautiful as her mother, the woman he had seen in his vision of the village? Even though he knew she was Shoshone, with her beauty, any warrior would be proud to take her as a wife. Tika knew it would be another six or eight summers before the blue-eyed girl would be of marrying age. By then she would be just as much Lakota as he was. Together they would be the most powerful and revered shaman on the great prairie and beyond.
By late afternoon, Tika came to where another river joined this one from the west. He stopped, wondering which river to follow. He sat there on his spotted war horse for only a few moments when a large red-tailed hawk landed on a dead branch of a pine just a few feet from him. Tika whispered, âBrother Hawk, guide me to the village ahead. Let me see what lies before me through your eyes.â
The hawk looked directly at Tika and ruffled his feathers, then took flight again. He soared high over the river directly to the south, and Tika followed. He was letting his horse pick the easiest trails. He was now in the mountains, though the snowcapped peaks still looked to be another dayâs ride to the south.
The hawk landed on the top of a pine not far ahead. Tika watched the hawk, but he also watched the forest as it thickened around him.
